Gifts for photographers

How often do you read a site with a list of gift ideas for photographers and you think – ‘Really?’ ‘REALLY??’

Things like camera cufflinks, and mugs shaped like lenses – do photographers really want them? Have these people actually asked a photographer what they’d want? Well I have. I’ve asked my photographer friends from around the world what they really want for Christmas, and put together the ultimate list of the best gifts for photographers.

It was very interesting that more people asked for time to be creative than for new kit. So, if there’s a photographer in your life, the cheapest and most loved gift you can give them is to take all their responsibilities off their hands for a weekend and tell them to go off and shoot without feeling guilty.

I’m a photographer. All I want for Christmas is a weekend off to shoot my own project.

Xanthe Berkeley

Xanthe suggested an Instax Share SP-1 portable printer, to print and share your photos on the go. Also an Ephiphanie camera bag.

And on my list will be Xanthe's 'Creating Time Capsules' online course. It's such a unique course - learning how to combine photos and video to preserve your memories.

Catherine Connor

Catherine runs the fabulous Aspire Photography Training in the UK, and on her wishlist is a trip to Venice for inspiration and a injection of creativity, and the book Venice Cult Recipes.

Given I have just launched Dairy Free Family Food, I couldn't be happier to hear that they've added food photography to their portfolio of courses - starting in May 2015.

Sharron Gibson

Sharron is one of few wedding photographers I know personally who I can say truly have their own unique style. Her personality shines through her gorgeous images (take a look: Image Garden Photography). She would love more time to take photos, and specifically an entire custom wedding edit from Fotofafa, and a one-off house clean.

Skip

Skip has been one of the biggest influences on my iPhone photography. His site Skipology is bursting with iPhone editing tutorials and ideas. He wants the (small) iPhone 6 this year (obvs), plus an iTunes gift card so he can pick his next apps. I love the iTunes card idea - not quite cash, but still gives you room to choose exactly what you want.

Lindsay Haywood

Lindsay is a talented social photographer (check out her Vintage Pin Ups) who is on a mission to support women with her photography, be it weddings, headshots, portraits or boudoir, and I hope her dream comes true this Christmas and sees her on a photo tour of Cuba with her new Fuji XT1.

Lizz Riley

Lizz is one half of DJ Archer Photography, creating stylish and memorable images for families and brides. She's been an inspiration to me on how to use Facebook effectively and efficiently. All she wants for Christmas is a pink Kelly Moore camera bag. She wasn't specific, but if it were me, I'd want this one (just in case anyone's reading).

Ryan Oakley

Ryan is a photographer who, almost overnight, turned a personal project into a successful Kickstarter project and is now the published author of his own photography book. Read more at The Humans of Nelson. His #1 gift would be time off to go shooting, followed closely by some 1 to 1 training and (my favourite) a huge print of one of his own images. We never print our images do we?

Curtis Daniel

Curtis has helped me out time and time again setting up my online business. He recommended a small piece of kit I've need for years, but didn't know actually existed until he showed me - the Manfrotto Super Clamp. It clamps onto anything, and then you can attach anything to the other end - camera, lights, flash, umbrella, reflector.

Stephanie Cronin

I met Stephanie on a Folio Albums styled shoot and if life gave us more time we'd have been on our long promised photo walk by now. She is another wedding and portrait photographer (Summers Photography) who just wants some time off to shoot her own projects in Paris or somewhere closer to home but just as photogenic.

Liz Godfrey

Liz and I first met 11 years ago when our boys were barely walking. She's long since moved back to the US and started a successful photography business and I'm so grateful for Facebook and Instagram so we can keep in touch. She'd love a Lensbaby this Christmas.

Lucy Heath

Lucy, from Capture by Lucy, has an award winning blog which never fails to provide photo styling inspiration. Not surprisingly she'd like props for Christmas - hanging vases and painted cutlery (to avoid reflections - see photo at the end). Also - Photojojo's cellphone lenses. She has the table-top photographer's must have accessory coming soon in her online shop - customised vinyl backdrops.

Lucy’s painted cutlery – how cool is this to avoid the reflections issue?

What’s missing from this list?

If I don’t get my weekend off to shoot in Venice (yes, I’m with Catherine on that one), I’d be very happy to have my backups and prints sorted out and, go on twist my arm, some new kit. This is my 2014 wish list as it stands today.

The 2014 edition of Digital Asset Management

Eye Fi Mobi card (must be mobi)

Instax camera - torn between this and the printer

Printstagram gift card - now not just for Instagram prints

Sony QX1, the camera in a lens, now shoots RAW

WIRELESS external hard drive

Smug Mug subscription

What have we forgotten? What’s top of your list? Did we get anything wrong? I’ve just realised we’re a bit light on photography books. What will you be buying for your photographer friends in the way of books, or what would you love to get? Send me a tweet filling me in on any or all of the above and I’ll add it to the list if it’s not to be missed:
